Overview

In 363, somewhere in Mesopotamia, on a campaign against the Persians, the emperor Julian, who had succeeded Constantine after his victory over Gaul, was going through a personal crisis. He sees that the new philosophical trend, Christianity, is as cruel and implacable as the old paganism, and so he returns to the ancient philosophers.
